August 2008

I started my journey with Oxford Community Schools in August of 2008. I was hired to teach stagecraft and serve as the Manager/Technical Director of the district Performing Arts Center. I also served as the keynote speaker for the Freshmen Link Crew Orientation Assembly. My stagecraft classes often collaborated with students and staff from the Special Education Department on various productions and projects around the Performing Arts Center. Through this collaboration, I developed a passion for working with students with special needs. Taking this passion to the next level, I decided to obtain my Master's Degree in Special Education. After earning this degree, I was awarded a Special Education teaching position at Oxford Middle School where I managed a caseload of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. I served as Direct Instruction Language Arts teacher and co-teacher in each of the core subject areas, helping to differentiate lessons and to meet each student at their point of need. Also at OMS, I served as the Where Everybody Belongs (W.E.B.) Coordinator. I led teams of 8th grade students who served as mentors and leaders, helping 6th graders transition to middle school. Currently in my Oxford journey, I am serving as Special Education teacher at Oxford Virtual Academy where I continue to help level the playing field for students with various learning styles and needs. All of these experiences have shaped my teaching/classroom philosophy of fostering an environment of belonging and safety, believing in yourself and respecting others, celebrating successes no matter how big or small, and trying your best.

My family and I live in Oxford, and my two children attend Oxford Community Schools. My wife is a Spanish teacher who also teaches English Learners. My father was a high school band teacher for 40 years. I play the trumpet and drums and have played in various blues and funk bands. I enjoy riding my bike around Oxford. My family enjoys downhill skiing and spending time in Northern Michigan.
