November 9, Evolv Weapons Detection Kiosks

Dear Oxford Middle School Families,

Student safety continues to guide our way forward as the district’s top priority. In the district communication sent to you on October 27, 2022, it stated that our district purchased two Evolv weapons detection kiosks for Oxford Middle School. The kiosks arrived late yesterday afternoon for installation.  In an effort to implement this safety layer as soon as possible, OMS will begin using the Evolv system tomorrow, Thursday, November 10, during student arrival

Today during seventh hour, students will be shown a video of our staff modeling the process for how to move through the Evolv security check-point. Please know that we will have many staff assisting the entry process until our students become acclimated to it.

There will be one Evolv kiosk set up at the main entrance (where our bus students enter the building, door #1) and one set up the gym entrance (where our car riders enter the building, door #21).

Students will walk through the Evolv kiosk with their bags, lunch bags and coats on.  They will need to take their Chromebooks out of their bags. The district provided Chromebooks do have an element within them that automatically sets off the machines.  The high school has developed a system to keep traffic flowing for students going through the system with their Chromebooks that we will be mirroring. Please see the attached image link.

Today, our students received an address label with their name on it to place on their individual district provided Chromebook. Student Chromebooks will not enter through the kiosk. Instead, students will place their Chromebook on a table adjacent to the Evolv system before going through the kiosk. Once through the kiosk, students will retrieve their Chromebook.

Any visitors or late arriving students to the building will also be required to check in through the Evolv Kiosk at the main entrance (door #25) before entering the main office to sign in.

As we implement this new safety measure at OMS, we ask for your patience. We anticipate this taking a few days before our students are able to move through this check point at a seamless pace. There will be armed security personnel at each check point.

We will be planning a presentation and demonstration of the Evolv weapons detection system for middle school families to attend in the weeks ahead.  Additionally, we welcome all parents/guardians to watch the comprehensive safety presentation that was given to Oxford High School families this summer on the district’s many layers of safety all of which now pertain to OMS aside from the digital ID card readers.

Thank you all for your continued support and partnership in school safety and the paramount role it plays in our student’s education.

Sincerely,

Brad Bigelow
