October 27, Reported Rumors Incident Update

Dear Oxford Middle School Families,

I wanted to take this opportunity to provide you with an update pertaining to the rumored reports heard at school about a shooting and/or possible gun being brought to school.

The OMS Administration received a vague OK2Say report last night stating there were rumors circulating throughout the building of a shooting or gun possibly being brought to school. As this was investigated last night, which also included the involvement of our Student Resource Officer, the individuals associated with the report were not able to provide any specific information about the source of the rumors nor did the individuals hear anything first hand. We have continued to investigate the situation this morning and have still not been able to substantiate either a primary source to the rumors nor anyone who might have heard this directly from someone.

As stated in a previous communication, there is increased security personnel on site today including our district’s weapon detection dog. Our students have a scheduled early release day on October 28th (tomorrow) and these supports will stay in place through then. Our increased safety measures as students arrive will continue tomorrow as well. This includes, checking backpacks, sports bags, instrument cases, lunch boxes and other student belongings. Our students were cooperative and patient as student check in did take longer this morning. We have increased the number of staff members at each student entry point to assist in this process. Each entry point also includes armed personnel.

We are thankful for the number of students who attended school today but also understand and support our families who did not send their student to school. Students who may be interested in accessing any classroom activities or assignments may do so through Schoology. Please encourage your student to reach out to a staff member if they need any support. We are here for our students and want to support them in any way that we can.

Please also be advised that we have postponed the originally scheduled 6th Grade Bash that was to be held today after school. The new date of this event is Monday, November 7th and the theme of this event will be centered around the fall season. We will be announcing this to our students during lunch today.

Please contact me should you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Brad Bigelow, Principal
